Dawgs Cruise By GAR Grenadiers 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick hosted their first dual match of
the season at Dawg Gymnasium against the Grenadiers of GAR on December 20.
Berwick cruised past GAR in front of the nice crowd on hand and treated
their loyal fans to a dominating 57-17 victory. Berwick is now 2-0 on
the season.
The Dawgs now just need 4 more victories
to record the 500th program win in the history of Berwick Wrestling.
Berwick won 10 of the 14 bouts against
GAR and the following 6 Dawgs recorded falls on the evening's action:
Steve Hess (Sr), Chris Bujno (Fr), Dom Yantorn (So), Lou Ney (Jr), Tyler
Perry (Sr), and Josh Winkelmann (Jr).
The dual started with Berwick senior
Steve Hess taking to the mat of manhood. Hess battled like a junkyard
dog against his opponent before delivering a crushing second period fall
which turned on the scoreboard lights with a 6-0 Dawg lead. Freshman
Chris Bujno entered the circle of war next and tied up his opponent in knots
before stapling a pair of shoulders to the gym floor for the second fall of
the night. Sophomore Dom Yantorn kept the Dawg pinning ways alive as
he wasted no time in collapsing his opponent for a lightning quick fall.
GAR was then forced to forfeit the next bout to sophomore Steve Prebola.
Just slightly after the match started, the Dawgs held a
commanding 24-0 lead.
GAR rebounded by hitting a string of 3 consecutive wins that
included a fall, a major decision, and a decision which narrowed Berwick's
lead to 24-13.
The Dawgs refused to allow any momentum to build for their
guests by taking the following 4 consecutive bouts.
Junior Lou Ney stepped inside the gladiator's arena next and
fiercely out-muscled and out-wrestled his opponent before showing his
challenger the gym's ceiling with a pulverizing pin. Senior Tyler
Perry charged into battle next for Berwick, and as quick a bolt of
lightning, delivered a pyroclastic blast of intense strength that quickly
pinned his opponent to the floor. Junior Josh Winkelmann was the
featured Dawg to appear next for the home crowd. Josh wrestled on a
mission and used his skill of will and the strength of a mountain-man to
succumb his opponent's shoulders flat to the mat for the 6th and final Dawg
fall of the night.
Berwick now held an insurmountable 42-13 lead. Though
the outcome of the contest was not in doubt, the crowd was yet to be treated
to the best action of the night.
Junior Nick Venditti appeared next for the night's premier
match-up. Nick immediately used his technical prowess and undeterred
strength to jump out for the initial lead. His opponent fought back
with a quick blow, and after a few additional flurries, knotted the bout all
tied-up at the end of regulation. The slugfest continued through 3 scoreless
overtime periods. After 8 minutes of wrestling, the final ride-out was
all that was left and Nick started in the top position. At this point,
it comes down to utter determination and conditioning. Nick had them
both and rode his opponent for the final 30 seconds to seal the win and the
crowd responded appreciatively with thunderous applause.
GAR took one last gasp and won a major
decision in the next bout that concluded all contests as the Grenadiers then
forfeited the last 2 remaining bouts to both junior Aaron Karns and
sophomore Ryan Sitler.
The crowd emptied from the gym with a
57-17 Berwick victory.
