Dawgs Crown 3 Champions At 2007 NE AA Regional Championship Tourney
Tyler Perry, Nick Venditti, & Aaron Karns All Win Exciting Championship Titles
Now Headed To The PIAA AA State Championship Tournament!!
Berwick Takes 3rd Place Team Finish Out Of 27 Schools Represented
Posted March 4, 2007

Wow!

3 Dawgs in the finals at the PIAA NE AA Regional Championship Tournament.

Make that 3 Regional Champions For Berwick Wrestling.

1.2.3. - Tyler Perry - Nick Venditti - Aaron Karns.

All 3 Dawgs, each of whom were also crowed district champions last week, secured their regional championship titles directly against their counterpart district champions from District 4.

In order, the 3 victories were achieved by the score of 4-2; 2-0 OT, and 2-1 in 2OT.  A quick look at those scores and they just kept getting tighter and tighter and may have caused irreparable damage to the stomach lining of the coaching staff and parents alike.

On a history side note, Berwick Wrestling has only ever had 4 Regional Champions since 1954.  That number has almost been doubled on one day!

A career and season long dream has been realized by these 3 Dawgs.

With 9 Dawgs competing at the PIAA NE AA Regional Championship tournament held at Williamsport High School on March 2 & 3, 2007, these 3 Dawgs made it out of the brutal competition to advance their season by one more week.

One qualifies for the state championship tournament by taking 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place at the regional championship tournament.

These 3 Dawgs made it out in style.

"Regional Championship Gold Kind Of Style."

Simply amazing!

Now its on to Hershey and there is no better place to end one's season.

Hershey is the last bus stop on the road to glory.

Tyler Perry, Nick Venditti, and Aaron Karns are now honored with the title of "Regional Champion - State Qualifier."  All 3 will now carry their monumental momentum to the 2007 PIAA AA State Championship tournament to be held at the Giant Center in Hershey on March 8, 9, & 10.

The goal now for the three Dawg standout Regional Champions is to reach the podium at the state championship tournament.  Two wins secures a spot on the steps with a highly cherished state medal adorned around one's neck.  The more wins one gets the higher the step on the podium with the ultimate goal of having an undefeated 3-day tournament that takes you to the top step - A State Championship Title.

As a team, Berwick also had an outstanding performance in its first-ever appearance at the NE AA Regional Championship tournament.  The Dawgs recorded a 3rd place team finish out of the 27 high schools in attendance.

Congratulations Dawgs!!

Congratulations Tyler, Nick, & Aaron!!

Good Luck & Best Wishes At States!!

Individual Regional Snapshot Wrap-Ups

Tyler Perry, Senior, 135lbs
District Champion, Regional Champion, State Qualifier

District Wrap
Senior team captain Tyler Perry notched his second district championship title and 4th consecutive district medal by just obliterating all of his opponents en-route to securing the gold medal.  In the final, Tyler showed his desire to quickly move on to the regional championship tournament as he struck with lightening precision in showing his opponent the ceiling in just a mind-numbing 1:03.  Tyler is on a mission quest.  The mission is Hershey for the state championship wrestling tournament.  Tyler is also in great position to break the all-time career win record in the history of Berwick Wrestling.
Regional Wrap
Breaks Berwick Wrestling's All-Time Career Win Record

Mission quest accomplished.  Senior stellar Dawg Captain Tyler Perry was not to be denied at the regional championship tournament.  After winning his quarterfinal bout by a commanding 5-0 decision, Tyler entered the all important semifinal match.  In the semifinal, Tyler exacted complete control in notching an impressive 4-3 decision that advanced him to the championship final and secured a berth at the state championship tournament.  But there was one more match to wrestle, one that determines the regional championship, one that was a matter of pride.  The match was against Tyler's District 4 counterpart district champion.  Tyler went all-out to gun down his final opponent and recorded an outstanding 4-2 decision to earn the title "Regional Champion" and place himself on the top step of the podium.  Perry now moves to the second phase of his mission quest to do battle at states with goal of pocketing a state medal to wrap-up his outstanding high school career.  Also, with the Regional Championship victory, Win #123, Tyler eclipsed Berwick Wrestling's all-time career win record of 122 which was previously held by Jeremy Griffith in 2003.
Congratulations Tyler!!

Nick Venditti, Junior, 160lbs
District Champion, Regional Champion, State Qualifier

District Wrap
Wins District Championship Tournament Outstanding Wrestler Award

No one at the district championship tournament would enter an argument over what weight class was the toughest.  Without a doubt, the 160lb weight class was brutal in just looking at the chart, let alone wrestling the matches. After nailing 2 consecutive first period pins, Nick won a simply outstanding 2-1 decision in his semifinal match.  In the championship final, Nick showed his superior strength and technique to exact control from start to finish to capture his district championship title and 3rd consecutive district medal.  For his top-notch performance, Nick was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler Award for the District 2 Championship tournament.
Regional Wrap
Sights set.  Ready - Aim - Fire.  That was the focus and brilliant stalwart determination displayed by junior standout Nick Venditti at the regional championship tournament.  After recording an overwhelming 9-0 major decision in the quarterfinal, a long-awaited match-up was targeted for the semifinal bout against a 2-time state qualifier.  The tight contest ended up not so tight as Nick forwarded a dominating 8-4 decision to the scorer's table and received in reply tickets to the state championship tournament.  In the championship final, an all-out battle ensued against the District 4 Champion representative.  Despite blow after blow by both opponents, the score at the end of the regulation 6 minutes was all knotted up at zero to force an exciting overtime stanza.  In a show of sheer grit, Nick, who has won more close 1-pont and 2-point matches than anyone I can remember, secured the championship-winning takedown to take the gold and the top step on the podium with a brilliant 2-0 overtime victory.
Congratulations Nick!!

Aaron Karns, Junior, 189lbs
District Champion, Regional Champion, State Qualifier

District Wrap
Junior Aaron Karns, the Prince of Punishment who wrestles like a brutal maniac, once again made mince-meat out of all his weekend opponents to win his district champion title and second consecutive district medal.  After destroying his opponents in the opening rounds, Aaron let loose an unrelenting barrage of physical artillery that saw him record a 10-0 major decision in the semifinal.  In the championship final, Aaron went to work like a blue-collar mechanic and once again detonated painful blow after blow that torpedoed his opponent for a captivating 7-0 decision and a gold medal around his neck.
Regional Wrap
Junior standout Aaron Karns, who has been wrestling like a demolishing wrecking ball all season long, went into destruction-mode yet once again at the regional championship tournament.  Aaron flattened his quarterfinal opponent with a brutalizing fall in 3:01.  In the semifinal bout Aaron used his overwhelming physical strength and technique to record a 4-1 decision and automatic right of passage to compete at the state championship tournament.  The championship final pitted Aaron against a fellow top gun and District 4 champion counterpart who placed 6th last year at states.  While Aaron's opponent may have had more name recognition, Aaron was determined to leave an indelible asterisk after his own name.  In a total nuclear war this contest was forced to double overtime by the two enraged contestants.  Aaron would not relent in the match and prevailed with a brilliant 2-1 2OT victory to stand on the top step of the regional championship podium.
Congratulations Aaron!!

Chris Bujno, Freshman, 103lbs,
District Champion, Regional Qualifier

District Wrap
Breaks Berwick Wrestling's All-Time Freshman Win Record

Freshman Chris Bujno, entering the district tournament as the #3 seed, dismantled his first 3 opponents en-route to the championship final.  In the final, Chris squared up against the #1 seed, a junior who was a returning district runner-up.  Chris displayed sheer heart and determination, along with his quickness and strength, to capture an impressive 4-2 decision for the district championship title.  Bujno's victory in the championship final, Win #34, also broke Berwick Wrestling's all-time freshman win record of 33 which was previously held by Tyler Perry in 2003-2004.
Regional Wrap
Chris notched an impressive quarterfinal decision to bolt to the semifinals.  In the semifinal, Chris incurred a heartbreaking 3-5 loss by decision that kept him from the championship final.  In the following consolation semifinal, Chris lost by decision to a returning state qualifier who was the eventual 3rd placer and second consecutive state qualifier .  Bujno ends his stellar freshman season knowing he's knocking at the door and also pockets a District Championship and 35 wins that surpassed the all-time freshman win record in the history of Berwick Wrestling.
Congratulations Chris!!

Dom Yantorn, Sophomore, 112lbs
District Champion, Regional Qualifier

District Wrap
Sophomore Dom Yantorn added his second consecutive district championship title to his already impressive varsity resume as he tore through his opponents at the district championship tournament.  In the championship final, Dom squared up against a fellow returning district champion for all all-out battle.  Well, one champ wasn't going to repeat, and Dom's mission not to be denied prevailed as he used his superior strength to control the action throughout the length of the bout in recording an exciting 2-0 decision for district championship title #2.
Regional Wrap
After dropping his quarterfinal match to the eventual regional champion, Dom tore-up his next consolation quarterfinal opponent with a brutalizing 16-0 technical fall.  In the consolation semifinal, Dom fought tooth and nail but ended up on the lower side of the scoreboard against the eventual 3rd placing state qualifier.  Yantorn ends his fantastic season by having notched his second consecutive District Championship and will be a major force to deal with for two more years.
Congratulations Dom!!

Lou Ney, Junior, 145lbs
District Champion, Regional Qualifier

District Wrap
Junior Lou Ney, wrestling up in weight from the regular season, used his blazing quickness and massive strength to pocket an outstanding district championship title and his second district medal.  After plowing through his early competition, Lou showed unrelenting determination in winning his exciting semifinal match in overtime.  In the final, Lou wasted no time in his pursuit for gold as he struck his opponent with bullet-blazing speed and delivered a pyroclastic blast of a fall in a mere 1:44 that left the crowd speechless in utter amazement.
Regional Wrap
After dropping a close decision in the quarterfinals, Lou had a rematch with his district semifinal opponent that he previously beat in overtime.  This time it wasn't overtime.  Lou opened the floodwater gates of strength and technique for a brilliant 8-2 win.  In the consolation semifinal Lou just came up short in a tight 1-5 decision.  Ney finishes his fantastic season by winning his first District Championship and second District Medal and is already primed and ready for a fantastic senior season next year.
Congratulations Lou!!

Ryan Sitler, Sophomore, 215lbs
District Runner-Up, Regional Qualifier

District Wrap
Sophomore Ryan Sitler, the King Meister of All Pin Misters who has recorded well over 20 pins this season (some kids would love to have over 20 wins let alone over 20 pins!!), kept his simply outstanding season going yet another week with an excellent weekend of wrestling at districts in winning runner-up honors.  After nailing one of his patented pins in his opening round, Ryan went on to decimate his semifinal opponent with a dominating 10-0 major decision.  In the final, Ryan wrestled like an unrelenting warrior against an over-sized opponent and only came up short in a tight decision.
Regional Wrap
Competing in a weight class that appeared like Samson versus Goliath, Ryan wrestled with all heart.  After dropping his quarterfinal match, Ryan lost his next match via a heartbreaking 0-1 decision.  It doesn't get any closer than that.  Sitler finishes his superb sophomore season, which was his first varsity season, as District Runner-Up and notching well over 20 pins on the year.
Congratulations Ryan!!

Steve Prebola, Sophomore, 119lbs
3rd Place Districts, Regional Qualifier

District Wrap
Sophomore Steve Prebola was on fire for the entire weekend of district championship competition in winning 3rd place honors.  After opening up with a victory via a crushing pin in his first match, Steve dropped a heartbreaker of a tight decision to the eventual district champion.  Steve made sure it was his only loss.  Steve went on to obliterate his next opponent with a 16-5 major decision before shutting out and shutting down his next 2 foes both via commanding 7-0 decisions.  In the consolation final, Steve's determination and technical skills entered stratospheric heights as he plummeted his opponent's shoulders to the mat in only 2:16 for the superb bronze medal.
Regional Wrap
After a tough quarterfinal loss, Steve took aim in the consolation bracket.  In the consolation quarterfinal, Steve was matched-up once again for the fourth time this season against last week's District 2 champion who had narrowly defeated Steve at the district tournament.  After each took exact turns at defeating the other prior to this weekend, it was now Steve's turn for redemption.  Redemption Steve got.  In an absolute thriller, Steve got the exciting 7-6 decision to knock off the district champion.  Steve then lost an extremely hard-fought match in the consolation semifinal by a tight 4-6 decision.  Prebola ends his season on a very high note surging past earlier season injury to wrestle on-fire and having placed a district place-winning medal in his pocket last week with 3rd place honors.
Congratulations Steve!!

Steve Hess, Senior, 285lbs
3rd Place Districts, Regional Qualifier
(click here for Press-Enterprise article On Steve, 3/2/07)
District Wrap
Wow!!  Senior Steve Hess is a first year wrestler.  Say that 3 times in a row.  Steve is now a district place winner, with 3rd place honors.  Say that 10 times.  Simply amazing!!  After winning his first match, Steve dropped a 2-point decision to the #2 seed.  Following his only loss, all hell broke loose for his upcoming opponents.  Steve ripped off a pair of decisions to earn the right to battle in the consolation final.  For the battle of bronze and right to wrestle on next week, an all-out war ensued.  Steve was losing by 1-point with approximately 15 seconds left on the clock and a restart from neutral in front of him.  Like a raging bull, Steve charged his opponent and and blasted him to his back in the final ticks of the clock for one of the most exciting 3-2 come from behind victories one can ever witness. The Dawg Faithful went nuts!!
Regional Wrap
Steve, a first year wrestler, was up against some stratospheric experience at the regional tournament and incurred two tough losses.  This webmaster has been around this sport for a long time and to have witnessed Steve's performance last week at the District 2 Championship tournament where he earned, and I mean well-earned, 3rd place district place winning honors was a sight to behold and a story that will be told for years to come.  By qualifying for the regional championship tournament, Hess did what many experienced wrestlers were not able to do.  Hess finishes the season, his only high school season, knowing he will forever hold the title of District Place Winner and Regional Qualifier.
Congratulations Steve!!
