Dawgs Lose Pair Of Close Heartbreakers At 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick Wrestling made its first-ever
appearance at the PIAA State Team Dual Championship tournament at the Giant
Center in Hershey on February 9. The Dawgs fell victim to a pair of
razor-thin losses by the score of 27-34 to Bermudian Springs and 31-33 to
Towanda.
On the scoreboard, both matches appeared
to come down to the last bout. We all know that is never the case.
There were a multitude of opportunities in each of the 2 matches that could
have changed the outcome.
Berwick definitely had the talent to
compete for a place winning finish, but in a state championship tournament
many outcomes are going to be by a razor-thin margin (Boiling Springs
defeated Line Mountain 30-29 and Towanda 35-34). But on this date
things just didn't fall into place as hoped for Berwick.
Berwick won 7 of the 14 bouts in each of
the two matches on the day. Now that's close.
Was it a disappointment for the Dawgs and
the Dawg Faithful? You can't paint over the obvious answer of
"yes." But we also need to do one very important thing.
Press Rewind.
Let's rewind to the first week of
practice for this championship winning Berwick Wrestling team.
Anyone with a sound mind associated with
the Berwick Wrestling Program at the beginning of preseason practice this
year felt "we may struggle as a dual team, but we should do good as a
tournament team and individually in the postseason." This was
basically a unanimous consensus.
With a team overwhelmingly comprised of
underclassman, Berwick knew it had a solid core of talent offset by a core
of inexperienced wrestlers. In the preseason it wasn't a team to wager
on in Las Vegas that Berwick was going to win multiple championship titles.
But as the season progressed, and with
the toughest regular season non-conference schedule in the district that
delivered early pain-numbing mental toughness, excitement started to bloom
based upon a few key facts.
First, the core of experienced wrestlers
were delivering with dominating performances.
Second, through coaching and individual
dedication, the core of less experienced wrestlers accelerated their
development to a higher level at a pace unseen at any time in recent memory.
It is this second fact that changed the entire season for Berwick Wrestling.
Berwick Wrestling started the season as a
questionable dual team. Berwick Wrestling ended the regular season by
winning the District 2 Class AA Team Dual Championship, a share of the WVC
Division I Championship Title, and competing in Hershey at the PIAA AA State
Team Dual Championship Tournament.
Sometimes it is important to press
rewind. Pressing rewind allows one to see things they may have missed
the first time. You get to see the little details that blew past you
in the heat of excitement during the original broadcast. Only by
pressing rewind can anyone really appreciate the Championship 2006-2007
Edition of Berwick Wrestling.
And for those of you who don't have the
patience to stay with the "play button," a quick press of the
"fast-forward" button reveals that the vast majority of the
Berwick Wrestling lineup returns next year.
But no fast-forwarding is allowed at this
time.
High anticipation awaits for the rest of
this season. Starting today, it is a new season. It is officially the second season. The individual postseason. It is that time of year where
individually it does not matter what you did or did not do during the
regular season. The goal now becomes a progression through the
district championship tournament, the northeast regional tournament,
ultimately onto the PIAA state championship tournament which is once again
held in the Giant Center in sweet Hershey. The Dawgs are poised and biting at the
bit. The Dawg Faithful extends our sincerest
congratulations to the Champion Dawgs in winning the District 2 AA Team Dual
Championship Title, winning a share of the WVC Division I Championship
Title, and for making history in being the first Berwick Wrestling team to
compete at Hershey in the PIAA AA Team Dual Championship Tournament! As a team, Berwick Wrestling completed
the season at the best place possible - Hershey!! Outstanding Job Dawgs!! As an individual wrestler, the quest is
to finish once again in Hershey!! Good Luck Dawgs In The Postseason! Go Dawgs!!
