DAWGS HEADED TO HERSHEY !! 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING One outstanding weekend of
wrestling.
That's the simplest way to
characterize the Dawg's performance this weekend while competing in
and winning the District 2 AA Team Dual Championship on February 3.
It was line-em up and knock-em
down.
Three opponents were lined up for
Berwick. The Dawgs knocked them all down in dominating
fashion.
First up on Friday night on
February 2 was Blue Ridge High School. Down they went by the
score of 67-2.
Second on the list Friday night
was Elk Lake High School. Down they went by the score of
61-12.
Then came the championship final
on Saturday night, February 3, against Lake Lehman High School.
Down they went by the score of 46-17.
Once again, another entry was
made in the history books of Berwick Wrestling.
By winning the 2007 District 2 AA
Team Dual Championship Tournament, the Dawgs will be making their
first ever appearance in the PIAA AA State Team Dual Championship
Tournament in Hershey on February 9 & 10.
Championship Final Against
Lake Lehman
It was a highly anticipated
match. Although Berwick previously defeated the Black Knights
of Lake Lehman by a 12-point spread, 39-27, on January 23, the
consensus was that a much tighter contest would play out the second
time around.
That didn't happen. Through
absolutely fantastic wrestling, the Dawgs knocked the garage door
down with a bulldozer by defeating the Black Knights of Lake Lehman
by more than double the margin of the first contest. This time
it was a 29-point spread. with the winning Berwick score of 46-17.
The evening's action began with
an important key bout that was drawn to start the contest.
Sophomore Steve Prebola was out of the pen first for the Dawgs to do
battle against an opponent that defeated Steve during the regular
season dual on January 23. Prebola wanted revenge and revenge
he exacted. After falling behind early, Prebola lit the
afterburners and tied the score at the end of regulation. In
overtime, Prebola used utter and complete determination and
gazelle-like speed to secure a brilliant takedown for a winning 6-4
overtime victory.
After Prebola's key win, one got
the feeling right then and there that this was going to be Berwick's
night.
The Black Knights then tipped
their hat and awarded a forfeit to sophomore Matt Knecht that
provided the Dawgs an early 9-0 lead.
This webmaster is forced to break
his own rules in coverage of the next bout. Lake Lehman won
the next hotly contested bout by a tight 4-0 decision when a Black
Knight top gun squared up against Dawg sophomore Matt Saxton.
This bout was another key contest on the night. Saxton poured
his heart and soul onto the mat and wrestled in utter superb fashion
showing the entire Dawg Faithful the top caliber wrestler he is and
the unlimited potential he possesses.
Senior sensation Tyler Perry was
assigned to do battle next for Berwick. Perry also had
something to prove - to himself.
With Berwick leading 9-3, Perry
squared off against another top gun for the Black Knights in yet
another key bout. While Perry defeated this opponent during
the league match on January 23, Tyler was not pleased with the tight
decision gained at the time. His past displeasure showed like
a streaking comet on a moonless night in their second contest.
Right off the whistle, Perry detonated a fierce explosive barrage of
strength and technique that completely overwhelmed his opponent to
place a fantastic 10-3 decision into the books and advance the Dawg
lead to 12-3. Junior Lou Ney entered the
gladiator's arena next for Berwick. Ney catapulted onto the
mat and immediately pounced on his opponent using his awe-inspiring
strength and quickness. Ney ate his opponent for breakfast
with a lightning quick pinning combination that cemented shoulders
to the mat in just 1:08. Berwick was now in the lead by
the score of 18-3. The Black Knights were able to
rebound and and gasp for air when they took the next bout by
technical fall and the following bout by a forfeit awarded by
Berwick. Berwick's lead was now narrowed
to an 18-14 advantage. This was as tight as the contest got on
the night and none of the Dawg Faithful in the bleachers were the
least bit concerned. Everyone knew Berwick still had a brigade
of top soldiers left that were biting at the bit to do battle next. Enter junior Josh Winkelmann who
was called to service next for Berwick. Winkelmann, who has
made as great of a stride since the beginning of the season as any
Dawg in the lineup, proved once again to both himself and the Dawg
Faithful just how much of a key he is to Berwick Wrestling.
Winkelmann, with the strength of a mountain man and utilizing his
famous skill of will, added explicit technique to his weaponry in
delivering a pyroclastic blast that melted his opponent's shoulders
to the gym floor in 3:27. The scoreboard lights now beamed a
24-14 Berwick lead. Junior Nick Venditti was released
out of the pen next. Venditti, with hips balanced to
perfection along with unmatched strength and mastery of technique,
quickly pounded on his opponent with unrelenting blow after blow.
Venditti mentally and physically demoralized his opponent throughout
the entire skirmish en-route to recording a fantastic 8-1 decision. With Berwick now leading 27-14,
junior Aaron Karns entered the mat of war against a fellow top
warrior from the army of the Black Knights. And what a war
this bout was. In one of the most fan-entertaining battles of
the night, Karns immediately picked up his opponent over his
shoulder and dropped him to the mat for an impressive takedown.
But the Black Knight fought back hard and narrowed the gap in
scoring. Karns would not be denied as his mental focus and
menacing strength was too much for his opponent to overcome as Aaron
went on to victory with a dazzling 4-3 decision. Berwick was now leading 30-14.
A quick check of the scorebook showed that a win in the next bout
would also be a match-breaking win for Berwick. The Dawgs
unleashed sophomore Ryan Sitler to both put away his opponent and
put away the match for Berwick. Once again, Sitler answered
the call to duty to turn out the lights. Sitler took to the
mat and wasted no time in trouncing his opponent with his massive
strength and quickly released one bombshell of a move, one after
another, to record a completely dominating 9-1 major decision. The Dawgs now held an
insurmountable 34-14 advantage. Lake Lehman won only their
third contested bout of the night when they took the next bout by
decision which only narrowed the Dawg lead to 34-17. It would
be the last of any Black Knight scoring. Freshman Chris Bujno was called
out of the Dawg pen next to enter the circle of war. Bujno
blasted off the whistle like a possessed man delivering a noxious
nightmare that his opponent would never forget. With utter
quickness, Bujno used his superior technique and strength to
immediately take down his opponent and place him on his back before
tightening the wrench that bolted shoulders to the floor in only
1:39. Sophomore Dom Yantorn was called
for clean-up duty on Berwick's behalf. And what a clean-up it
was. Yantorn ignited his powerful thrusters right off the
start and simply crushed his opponent immediately to that mat.
In lightening fashion, Yantorn cinched-up a vise grip that even
Houdini could not escape before drilling his opponent's singlet to
the mat in just 36 seconds. The final 2 first period Berwick
pins in the final 2 bouts of the night were like watching a grand
finale of a fireworks display. And what a fantastic evening of
fireworks it was, complete with a standing ovation from the Dawg
Faithful who jolted off their seats to congratulate the Champion
Dawgs in their 46-17 victory over Lake Lehman to win the 2007
District 2 AA Team Dual Championship. Yes, once again, we are so proud
to announce the following phrase that we have become so accustomed
