Dawgs Edge Coughlin Crusaders 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick traveled to Wilkes-Barre
on January 20 to take on the Crusaders of Coughlin High School.
On another exciting night of wrestling, the Dawgs edged the
Crusaders 41-36. The Dawgs improved to 12 - 6 on the season
(undefeated in district action).
The tale of the night's action
was that this dual was simply an all-out war. Fought in 14
heavily contested battles of strike and counter-strike, this war of
wits and will evolved into a similitude of the military doctrine of
MAD - "Mutual Assured Destruction."
It was a night of sheer nuclear
fallout. In the 14 heated battles that ensued, 10 were decided
by falls (Berwick 6, Coughlin 4), 2 technical falls (Berwick 1,
Coughlin 1), and just 1 major decision (Coughlin) and 1 decision
(Coughlin).
That's right - just one decision.
Now that's a lot of mat-denting blasts.
Coughlin succeeded in a
preemptive strike and ignited the scoreboard lights by taking a 10-0
lead with 2 opening volleys that consisted of one major decision and
one fall.
It was then Berwick's turn to
counter-strike.
Berwick launched senior top-gun
Tyler Perry into the fray. Perry took off onto the mat with
his afterburners blazing and with blinding quickness delivered a
devastating warhead that melted his opponent's shoulders to that mat
in a mere 1:14.
The Dawgs then assigned junior
Lou Ney as the next weapon in its arsenal. Ney fiercely
engaged his opponent, and in what started as an absolute dog fight,
Lou released a bombastic payload of ultimate devastation that sealed
his opponent's shoulders to the gym floor in 3:23 which placed
Berwick back in the lead by the score of 12-10.
Coughlin immediately fought back
like a cat getting a bath and clawed-out victories in the next 2
bouts, one by fall and one by major decision.
This Crusader sortie gave
Coughlin the lead once again by the score of 21-12.
Berwick then released junior Nick
Venditti to the font lines of this incessant war with the sole
mission to regain lost ground. Venditti blasted to the mat
with unyielding vengeance and quickly took complete control of his
opponent before discharging a pulverizing barrage of sheer strength
that crashed shoulders to the mat for an impressive fall in 2:55. But Coughlin would not relent. The Crusaders captured the next
bout by decision and that kept the Dawgs in their pen and on the
losing side of a 24-18 score. Berwick desperately needed an
all-out assault. The Dawgs dialed-up junior Aaron
Karns to answer the call to duty. Karns bolted to the circle
of war with malicious intent to administer retaliatory retribution
and wasted no time in getting the Dawg Faithful to their feet by
placing his opponent on his back for a crushing fall in just 42
seconds. The score was now all tied-up at
24 apiece. Coughlin would not yield and took
the next bout by fall which allowed them to yet once again take the
lead by the score of 30-24. Berwick, down by 6 points, then
sent out their sophomore pinning machine in Ryan Sitler for a key
battle that must be won. Sitler and his opponent fought each
other like starving junkyard dogs over a piece of raw red meat for
over 2 frames. In the third frame Sitler once again detonated
one of his patented explosive pinning combinations that made his
opponent stare at the ceiling for a mind-numbing fall in 5:12. Once again the score was all
knotted up. This time the lights beamed 30-30 with 3 bouts
left. The Dawgs then assigned their
youngest warrior, freshman Chris Bujno, to skirmish with a senior
from the Crusaders militia. The age difference wasn't the only
difference on the mat as Bujno immediately conducted a masterful
takedown clinic before repeatedly forcing his opponent to his back
via demoralizing blow after blow that resulted in an overtly
dominating 21-6 technical fall in just 4:39. With Berwick now in the lead by
the score of 35-30, there were still 2 bouts left and the Dawgs
needed to deliver the fatal blow if they were to walk out of the gym
victorious. Berwick then released sophomore
Dom Yantorn off the launch pad and into the hostilities of battle.
Yantorn, knowing that a win would seal the victory for the Dawgs,
wrestled like a madman crazed for the last decade as he completely
physically and mentally overwhelmed his opponent before delivering
the all-important and match-ending pin in only a mere 1:12. The dual was now in Berwick's
pocket with a 41-30 lead. However, the pesky Crusaders
still would not relinquish the fight and took the the last bout of
the night by fall. Berwick's ability to out-slug the Crusaders
was pushed to the limit but the Dawgs showed their mettle and stayed
unbeaten in district action with a 41-36 victory. Winning Dawgs Against Coughlin Congratulations Dawgs!! 2006 -
