Dawgs Slay Wyoming Valley West Spartans 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick traveled to Wyoming
Valley West on January 17 to do battle against the Spartans.
In a total team effort, with a combination of exceptional wrestling
and excellent strategic coaching, the Dawgs overwhelmed the host
Spartans with a commanding 43-26 victory.
The Dawgs are now 11 - 6 on the
season (undefeated in district action with only losses incurred at
The Virginia Battlefield Duals).
Recording the 5 falls notched on
the night for Berwick included Nick Venditti, Richard Brown, Tyler
Perry, Lou Ney, and Josh Winkelmann.
Junior Nick Venditti opened up
the action on Berwick's behalf. Venditti wasted no time in
controlling the action and exacted punishing blow after blow before
cementing his opponent to the gym floor in the second frame.
Senior Richard Brown was out of the pen next. Brown, in one of
the key match-ups of the night, got the Berwick crowd to its feet by
rising to the occasion in using his behemoth man-strength to
administer a macerating pin in the second frame. Junior Aaron
Karns entered the gladiator arena next. Karns, with his
precise technical skills and tremendous conditioning, simply
out-wrestled and out-muscled his opponent to record a superb 13-3
major decision.
After the first 3 bouts, Berwick
held an impressive 16-0 lead.
The Spartans got on the
scoreboard by taking the next bout, a Samson versus Goliath match-up
that had to be seen to be appreciated, by the slim margin of an 8-6
decision.
Freshman Chris Bujno entered the
circle of battle next for Berwick. Bujno, with the quickness
of Speedy Gonzalez, secured a swift precision takedown and then
physically controlled his opponent throughout 3 frames to pocket an
impressive 5-2 decision. Wyoming Valley West then tipped their
hat and rewarded a forfeit to sophomore Dominic Yantorn.
Berwick now had an inspiring 25-3
lead. The Dawg lead was narrowed as the Spartans took the next
3 bouts, 1 by decision and 2 by major decision, but the Dawgs stayed
out front 25-14.
Senior Tyler Perry entered the
circle of manhood next for Berwick with the sole purpose to stop the
bleeding and to advance the lights on the scoreboard. Perry,
using meticulous precision technique, surgically cut through his
opponent before stitching his opponent's singlet to the mat for a
fall in the second period. Wyoming Valley West was able to
catch their breath once again and negated the recent Dawg pin by
taking the next bout by fall. With 3 bouts still remaining on
the venue, Berwick was holding a 31-20 lead. Junior Lou Ney was up next to
take to the circle of war for the Dawgs. Ney, wrestling with
the swiftness and power of a massive tsunami, stormed his opponent
off the whistle and delivered a tidal wave of destruction before
submerging his opponents shoulders flat to the mat for a team
match-breaking second period pin. Though the outcome of the
night's action was no longer in doubt, the Spartans once again came
back to take the next bout by fall. The finale of the evening's drama
came as the Dawgs proudly announced junior Josh Winkelmann as last
Dawg out of the pen. Winkelmann, who has been wrestling in
simply awe-inspiring form, once again treated the Berwick Faithful
to a stupendous match that witnessed him apply the now famous
"skill of will" in which he physically and mentally routed
his opponent before hammering a pair of shoulders to the gym floor
for an outstanding second period pin. On yet another dazzling night of
wrestling, Berwick left Spartan gymnasium along with the proud Dawg
Faithful with a commanding 43-26 victory. Winning Dawgs Against Wyoming
