Dawgs Gun Down Pittston Patriots 2006 - 2007 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick traveled to the often
rowdy Pittston High School gymnasium on January 11 to take on the
Patriots in the annual slugfest of district rivals. The Dawgs
gunned down the Patriots with a convincing 39-26 victory. It
has been several years since Berwick was able to defeat Pittston and
that only made the taste of victory even sweeter.
The Dawgs are now 10 - 6 on the
season (undefeated in district action with only losses incurred at
The Virginia Battlefield Duals).
Simply put - Berwick showed up to
wrestle and wrestle their hearts out they did. It was an
outstanding performance of determination on behalf of all the
Berwick wrestlers.
The evening's action started with
sophomore Matt Knecht taking to the mat of manhood. Knecht,
wrestling with confidence flying sky high with the wind, got Berwick
on the scoreboard right off the bat with a superb and commanding 7-4
decision that gave Berwick a 3-0 lead. But the Patriots
bounced right back and took the next bout by fall to regain the lead
at 6-3.
Junior Lou Ney was up next and
would not allow the Patriots to gain any momentum. Ney put on
a clinic of sheer strength and technique in man-handling his
opponent for a 9-0 major decision. Ney's win put Berwick back
out in front by a mere 7-6 margin.
Once again, Pittston would
see-saw the scoreboard lights by winning the next bout by fall that
gave the Patriots a 12-7 lead.
Senior Tyler Perry was called
upon next to utilize his veteran prowess. Perry put Berwick
back in the lead by the score of 13-12, a lead that would never
again be relinquished, when he brutally punished his opponent before
rattling the gym floor with a pulverizing pin in a mere 1:41.
Junior Josh Winkelmann stepped
into the circle of war next for Berwick. After stepping in,
Winkelmann stepped it up, and in the most outstanding display of
sheer will and determination, his non-relenting pursuit of victory
resulted in a stupendous 3-2 decision.
Next up was the
match-of-the-night. It was Berwick's turn to announce, and the
Dawgs announced standout junior Nick Venditti for the call to
service. Pittston replied by sending out their top-gun.
In a thriller-from-Manila, Venditti utilized his utter physical and
inner-strength to control every aspect of the tight bout to record a
simply dazzling 1-0 decision. The cheers of all the Berwick
Faithful rang loud throughout the gym.
Berwick was now out front 19-12.
The Patriots exhaled, caught
their breath, and added excitement to the gymnasium when they took
the next bout by technical fall that narrowed the Dawg lead to
19-17. Pittston decided to tip their hat and reward a forfeit
to junior standout Aaron Karns that expanded Berwick's lead to
25-17. Sophomore Ryan Sitler was up next
on the mat of fortitude for Berwick. Sitler, the Kingpin
Meister of all Pin Meisters, once again sucked the breath out of the
entire gymnasium by delivering a noxious and deleterious pinning
combination that nailed his opponent's singlet to the floor in a
mere 45 seconds. With Berwick's lead now at 31-17,
Pittston was able to twinkle some more scoreboard lights when they
took the next bout by fall which narrowed the Dawg lead to 31-23. Berwick then sent out freshman
Chris Bujno into the circle of courage. Bujno, using his
menacing quickness and strength, wrestled like a non-relenting
mosquito on a hot, humid day by taking command of his opponent from
start to finish to notch a team match-breaking 8-0 major decision. Dawg sophomore Dom Yantorn was
next in line to enter the gladiator arena. Yantorn wasted no
time in delivering unremitting blow after blow that resulted in
multiple series of back points that built an insurmountable lead
which witnessed the buzzer sounding with a 10-0 major decision. The Patriots took the last bout
of the night by a tight 3-0 decision in an extremely well-wrestled
match by both wrestlers. But it was too little and much too
late for Pittston. Berwick wrestlers joined the Dawg
Faithful in the stands to celebrate an outstanding night of
wrestling that saw the Dawgs empty the gym with the scoreboard
lights beaming a 39-26 Berwick victory. Winning Dawgs Against Pittston Congratulations Dawgs!! 2006 -
