Dawgs Take First Dual Of The Season With 45 - 28
Victory Over GAR On December 14
The Dawgs opened the 2005-2006 season in impressive style on
December 14 when they traveled to GAR High School and walked out of the
visitor's gymnasium with a 45-28 victory. The "Yates
Countdown" now stands at 7.
The Dawgs captured 9 bouts and secured 5 falls in which 2
were under 1 minute. Sophomore Nick Venditti nailed the fastest pin of
the night in just .39 seconds with Sophomore Aaron Karns right smack behind
with a .44 second fall.
Nick Venditti (So) got the night's action started in a bout
as fast as wrestling against Quick Draw McGraw, as Venditti planted his
opponent's shoulders to the floor in a lightning 39 seconds to open a 6-0
Dawg lead. The Grenadiers were not impressed with the early Berwick
lead and came back in the next bout to capture their own fall which knotted
up the score at 6 apiece. This was the closest the match would get.
Jeff May (Sr) jogged out to the circle next and lit a fire
under the Dawgs that would result in 5 consecutive wins. May,
wrestling like a madman that just escaped from a psychiatric ward, used his
beefed-up body mass to overwhelm his opponent before power-stapling a
singlet to the mat for a fall. Josh Walsh (Sr) appeared next under the
glowing inner circle overhead light and used his veteran prowess and
technique to out-gun and out-wrestle his opponent for a splendid decision.
Steve Ferguson (Sr) entered the "circle of war" next and, donning
all the weaponry acquired from the past several years, let loose a firestorm
of determination in also capturing an excellent decision.
The Dawg rally was far from over. Aaron Karns (So)
picked up where he left off from his excellent showing in this past
weekend's tournament and wasted absolutely no time in delivering a
pyroclastic blast to the mat that cemented shoulders to the ground in just a
mere 42 seconds. Seth Fetteroff (So) came out next to pick up a
courtesy forfeit from the host team.
The score was now Berwick a lot and GAR very little.
The Grenadiers then got a gasp of air when they recorded a fall in the next
bout to bring their score to 12.
New faces for the Dawgs then appeared next to add another
dozen to the Berwick lights on the scoreboard. Derek Bower (So)
traversed to the inner circle where man meets man and would not be outdone
by his teammates as he quickly pounced on his opponent before mopping the
mat with a pair of shoulders in recording a second period pin.
Dominick Yantorn (Fr) strutted out to the mat of manhood next for his first
varsity dual action. Yantorn, like a blazing meteor crashing to earth,
delivered his own version of Deep Impact by collapsing shoulders to the
floor for a speedy first period pin.
GAR would take the next 2 bouts by fall and finished the
night with 4 falls and 1 decision. In-between the late Grenadier rally
was Lou Ney (So) making his first appearance of the season after recovering
from an injury. In what was the most exciting bout of the night, Ney
used his young but battle-tested experience and mental focus to out-wrestle
and out-last his opponent in a thrilling 1-point decision.
Berwick emptied the gymnasium with the lights on the
scoreboard showing a Berwick win over GAR by the score of 45-28.
