Building a champion wrestling program is
much like starting and operating a publicly traded manufacturing business.
First you have to hire a high quality CEO (head coach) and competent
employees (assistant coaches and matbackers). Then you need to secure
the raw material (freshman) needed to produce your finished product
(wrestlers). The manufacturing process from raw material (freshman) to
finished product (wrestler) is a tedious and time-consuming task.
Along the way you must adhere to high standards of quality assurance
(discipline). During quality assurance (discipline), some product
(wrestlers) may have to be discarded (bad apples) in order to ensure the
product batch (team) is not contaminated. There comes a time that you
must meet your product delivery schedule (start of season). You market
(college recruiting, website exposure) your product (wrestlers) and you hope
it performs well under product testing (competition). As with any
business (wrestling program), some fiscal years (seasons) will be better
than others. There will be years the stockholders (fans) will be happy
with your performance (winning season record). Other years the
stockholders (fans) may want to cut your throat (losing season record).
The CEO (head coach) and employees (assistant coaches. matbackers) are never
safe from the chopping block of unemployment (getting fired). But our
1-year, 3-year, and 5-year goals and objectives (work ethic) are clearly
stated, measurable, and achievable. We plan to continue making the
finest name-brand product (wrestlers) that will continually squash our
competition (opponents) in the marketplace (district, regional, state
championship tournaments).
PS: There are times I even get a
kick out of myself. :-))
