DAWGS SLAY BLACK KNIGHTS 37 -24 2005 - 2006 BERWICK WRESTLING Berwick traveled to Lake Lehman High School on January 12 in
a key district dual meet against the Black Knights. After incurring 5 losses at the recent Virginia Battlefield
Duals, the Dawgs needed to regroup and build-off of those losses as they now
enter the most important part of the regular dual meet season.
Berwick
was undefeated in district competition going into the night's action against
Lake Lehman. Berwick is still undefeated in the district. The Dawgs defeated the Black Knights in a scrappy battle by the score of
37-24. Berwick is now 8-5 overall and 5-0 in District 2
competition.
The big Dawg victory also notched "Career Win #200" for Head Coach
Ernie Yates.

is the key word to describe this important dual. Berwick took 9
of the 14 bouts but the three falls recorded by Lake Lehman kept the
Black Knights closer than the Dawgs had wished. The
Dawgs and the Black Knights opened up by splitting the first four
bouts. The night's action started with sophomore Aaron Karns
entering the circle of battle and Aaron got the Dawgs off to a great
start by punishing his opponent for the duration with superb wrestling
in recording a dominant 13-0 major decision. The Black Knights struck
right back in recording a fall in the next period. Sophomore
Derek Bower, back in the lineup after several weeks due to an injury,
put on a splendid show for the packed audience . Bower wrestled
tough and strong in his return debut and posted a thrilling 7-6
decision into the books. But Lake Lehman struck right back to
regain the lead a second time with another pin in the next bout. After
four battles, Berwick was now losing 7-12. It
was rally time. Berwick responded to the early scrappy wrestling
and see-saw lights on the scoreboard and ripped off a total of six wins in a row to knock the air from the Black Knights. Lake
Lehman gave up its lead when it awarded a free admission ticket to
freshman Dom Yantorn. Berwick was now on the winning side of a
13-12 score and a lead it would never relinquish again for the
duration of the contest. Freshman Steve Prebola strutted
out to the mat next for the Dawgs, and in a highly contested and
action-packed bout, had his hand raised high to the sky for a 9-6
decision. Lake Lehman once again added to its own defeat by
awarding its second and last forfeit of the night to freshman Matt
Knecht. Sophomore Lou Ney
kept the rally fire burning bright in another one of the night's most
enjoyable bouts. Lou's quickness and technique was the
determining factors as he out-wrestled his opponent to notch an excellent
7-3 decision. Junior Tyler Perry came out next for the Dawgs,
and in a bout where the final score did not reflect the overpowering
performance witnessed on the mat, Tyler
maintained complete control and commandeered his way to a 4-0
decision. Sophomore Nick Venditti entered the circle of manhood
next for Berwick with the goal putting the lights out in the Black
Knight's gymnasium. Nick did just that as he pummeled his
opponent around the mat for over two periods before stapling a singlet
to the mat in 4:26. Lake Lehman took
a breath of air when it took the next exciting bout by a 4-2
decision. But Berwick still retained a commanding 34-15 lead. Senior
Josh Walsh engaged the circle of pride next and jumped off the whistle
in taking overwhelming control of his bout. Josh resorted to his
skilled "take him down and let him up" and placed a decisive 14-7 win
on the scoreboard for Berwick. Lake
Lehman closed the night's action on a strong note by taking the next
two bouts, one by a close 7-5 decision and the last by fall. But
it was too little too late as the Dawgs emptied the gym congratulating
Head Coach Yates on his 200th Career Win with a 37-24 victory on the
road. Winning Dawgs
