BERWICK WRESTLING
Over 50 Years Of Pride & Tradition

Berwick Takes 6th Place At Virginia Battlefield Duals On January 6 & 7
Dawgs Go 3-5 Against Some Of The Best Teams In State & Country
Several Dawgs Notch Big Wins Against Ranked Opponents

Berwick Wrestling head coach Ernie Yates scheduled the Dawgs to compete at the super tough Virginia Battlefield Duals last year because he wanted the Dawgs to be exposed to some of the best teams in the country.  There were no illusions of grandeur.  Coach Yates had just one goal.  If you want to set a goal to be the best, you have to compete against the best.

Last year wasn't just a one-shot appointment at the Virginia Battlefield Duals.  The goal to improve is a continuous goal, one that never ceases.  And no better place for this year's young but talented Dawgs to get the experience and maturity needed to continue on their quest for excellence.

Berwick continued on its quest when the Dawgs competed at the Virginia Battlefield Duals on January 6 & 7.  Berwick finished 6th going 3-5 in the 12-team tournament that was stacked with both state and nationally ranked teams.  More importantly, several Dawgs competed against highly ranked wrestlers and recorded some big wins at the tournament that will be key to progression throughout the rest of the season.

Berwick is now 7-5 on the season (only losses incurred at the Battlefield Duals) and is still undefeated in district competition.  The Yates Countdown now stands at "1" for the 200th career win for Head Coach Ernie Yates.  All eyes will be looking forward to get the magic win at the upcoming match-up with Lake Lehman on Thursday.

At the Battlefield Duals, senior team captain Josh Walsh had an outstanding tournament going 6-2 and one of his two loses were to Junior Pearman of Great Bridge who is ranked #1 in Virginia and #11 in the country.  Among wins for Walsh was an 8-2 decision over Colonial Forge's Trevor Muhler who is ranked #5 in Class AAA in Virginia.  Josh also had a great win over Upper Perkiomen's Sam Walters with a thrilling 3-1 overtime decision.  Walters was a 2005 Class AAA state championship tournament qualifier at 130 pounds a season ago.

Sophomore Lou Ney had a great weekend and went 6-2 with one of his two losses to Upper Perkiomen's Chris Sheets who is ranked #3 in Pennsylvania Class AAA.

Junior team captain Tyler Perry also had a highly impressive tournament by going 6-2.  Tyler was named outstanding wrestler from Berwick by attending team coaches.  Perry's two losses were to Jordan Frishkorn (#2 in the country) and Austin Reed of Upper Perkiomen (#10 in Pennsylvania).

Senior Zeb Bankes had a simply superb weekend going 6-2.  All wins for Bankes were by fall and including a win by pin over the #7 ranked wrestler in Virginia.

Sophomore Aaron Karns had a great showing in going 5-3 against some very stiff competition.  Karns pinned Matt Reck of Colonial Forge who is ranked #7 in Virginia Class AAA.  Karns also had a 8-6 win by decision over Tim Hill of Great Bridge who is ranked #4 in Virginia.  Even with all of the big wins Aaron had, his most impressive outing may have been his 3-7 loss to Brent Fiorito of Upper Perkiomen.  Fiorito took 3rd place at the PIAA Class state championship tournament last year at 152lbs and is currently ranked #1 in Pennsylvania at 160lbs and #16 in the country.
