Dawgs Capture Second Annual 2007 - 2008 BERWICK WRESTLING For the second consecutive year, the
Dawgs went undefeated and captured the Second Annual Berwick Duals held at
Berwick High School on December 27, 2007. With the 5-0 dual tournament
performance, the Dawgs elevated their season record to 8-0.
It was also the second team championship
title awarded to the Dawgs so far in this early stage of the season.
On December 7 & 8, 2007, Berwick won the team championship title at the
23-team field of the Penn Manor individual tournament.
The Berwick Duals featured a highly
competitive 7-team field which included: Berwick, Abington Heights,
West Scranton, Troy, Pine Grove, Mifflinburg, and Blue Ridge.
Top 3 Finishing Teams: Berwick's Dual Team Scores Berwick opened up the tournament with a
46-25 win over West Scranton. The Dawgs then recorded a 49-21 victory
over Blue Ridge.
In a big showdown with Abington Heights
in the next dual, freshman Roy Dennis, senior Aaron Karns, and sophomore
Chris Bujno all recorded important falls late in the contest for the Dawgs
that knotted up the score at 36-36 going into the final bout.
Sandwiched between the late Berwick rally witnessed junior Ryan Sitler bump
up to 280lbs, and in a brilliant contest where he surely was giving up at
least 40-50 pounds, Sitler nearly knocked off a Comet returning state place
winner. With the strategy paying off huge dividends, the table was set
for the final and deciding bout of the night. Junior Dom Yantorn, with
the match outcome on his shoulders, delivered a spectacular performance with
a 12-2 major decision to lift Berwick to a thrilling 40-36 win.
Berwick then went on to convincingly
defeat Pine Grove by the score of 57-17. Despite the lopsided team
score, this dual featured an outstanding contest between Berwick returning
State Place Winner Nick Venditti and a Pine Grove returning State Place
Winner. Venditti, down 2-4 in the second period, unleashed a
determined flurry in the latter part of the second that included both an
escape and a takedown. Holding a 5-4 lead into the third frame,
Venditti then rode his opponent tough for the entire duration of the final
two minutes to capture a fantastic 5-4 victory.
Berwick's last dual was a sheer dogfight
with Troy. With Troy's grapplers wrestling great with heated
determination, combined with Berwick appearing a little flat in losing some
close bouts and not picking up more bonus points in other bouts, the end
result was a scoreboard showing lights beaming a 36-36 tie at the end of the
contest. The referee's then had to immediately dig out the
rulebook and start reading off the tiebreaker criteria one by one.
With a referee huddle around both
coaching staffs at the scorer's table, the team scorer's from each team were
repeatedly, and endlessly, saying the same numbers for each team on each
line item of the tiebreaker criteria. Digging way down to criteria F,
or #6, most first points scored in each bout, Berwick was awarded the
victory by a 16-6 margin. The tiebreaker elevated the dual score for a
37-36 Dawg victory. In the end, the Dawgs bent but did not break.
A sign of a true championship team.
Congratulations to the Champion Dawgs!
BERWICK RESULTS Berwick 46 - West Scranton 25 Berwick 49 - Blue Ridge 21 Berwick 40 - Abington Heights 36 Berwick 57 - Pine Grove 17 Berwick 37 - Troy 36 (tb, criteria F) OTHER TEAM SCORES: Abington Heights - 2nd Place West Scranton - 3rd Place Troy Pine Grove Blue Ridge Mifflinburg WEBMASTER NOTES -
DAWG HIGHLIGHTS AT BERWICK DUALS Bout Of The Day - Nick Venditti
versus Pine Grove's Charles Aungst. Both returning state place winners
put on quite a performance. Venditti, down 2-4 in the second frame,
scored an escape and takedown before end of second period to take a 5-4
lead. Venditti held lead by keeping Aungst, who chose bottom to start
the third, to the mat for the entire two minutes to record a fantastic 5-4
victory. Clutch Bout Of The Day - Dom
Yantorn versus Abington Height's Dan Pascale. With the contest between
Berwick and Abington Heights all knotted up at 36-36 and down to the last
bout of the night, Yantorn put on quite a show in recording an outstanding
12-2 major decision to lift the Dawgs to a 40-36 victory. Key Bouts Of The Day - Roy Dennis,
Aaron Karns, & Chris Bujno versus Abington Heights. With Berwick
trailing Abington Heights by the score of 18-27, the trio above ripped off
three commanding pins to lift the Dawgs to a 36-30 lead. After Berwick
awarded a forfeit in the next weight class, which tied up the score at
36-36, the table was set for Yantorn's decisive last bout win for the team
victory. Most Impressive Bout Of The Day -
Ryan Sitler versus Abington Height's returning state place winner Evan
Craig. Sometimes the most impressive bout is not a win. This was
the case with Sitler's 2-4 loss by decision in this bout. Bumping up
to 280lbs and easily giving up at least 40-50 pounds against a returning
state place winner, Sitler was the outward aggressor throughout the 6-minute
bout and had the Dawg Faithful excited out of their seats with his valiant
performance and determination. It is doubtful Berwick could have
defeated Abington Heights if it were not for Sitler's outstanding match. Coaching Strategy Of The Day -
Dawgs versus Abington Heights and Dawgs versus Troy. Late shuffles on
both accounts. One against Troy, strategically made on scoreboard
situation with 2 bouts remaining, gave the Dawgs their best probability to
eventually win. Against Abington Heights, the answer is simple - the
strategy sealed the deal. Congratulations Once Again Dawgs!!
