Dawgs Dunk Wyoming Area 60 - 7 2007 - 2008 BERWICK WRESTLING The Dawgs traveled to take on the
Warriors of Wyoming Area High School on December 19, 2007.
Berwick made a slam dunk of the dual contest winning the night's
action by the overwhelming score of 60 - 7.
On a special note, senior
sensation Lou Ney was the toast of the evening as he notched Career
Win #100 via a fall (see separate coverage). Congratulations Lou!!
Senior superstar Nick Venditti
got the action started in the first bout for the Dawgs. Nick
wasted no time in utilizing his superior strength and
laser-precision technique in cementing shoulders to the mat for a
fall in 2:24.
The Warriors bounced back to grab
a win by a tight decision in the next bout. It would end up
being only one of two wins for Wyoming Area on the night.
With a 6-3 Dawg lead, written
notice would soon be served by the Dawgs who were eager to initiate
a rallying momentum.
Freshman Roy Dennis was called
out of the Dawg Pen to enter the gladiator's arena. Dennis
kicked the tires and lit the fire that ignited the needed Dawg
rally. Dennis immediately pounced on his challenger, and as if
a bolt of lightning struck the mat, opponent shoulders were fused to
the gym floor in a mere 1:02. Junior Ryan Sitler was ordered
out on a combat mission next for Berwick. Sitler, with the
physical presence of a Sasquatch and the quickness of a mountain
lion, went on a blitzkrieg attack that defeated his opponent by fall
in only 1:24. Sophomore Dom Morrel entered the circle of war
next for the Dawgs. Morrel quickly engaged in an offensive
onslaught that inundated his opponent and Dom sounded the buzzer to
end the contest with a spectacular pin in just 1:13.
The Warriors then tipped their
hat and awarded a forfeit to sophomore Chris Bujno. Berwick
and Wyoming Area then traded forfeits in the next weight class that
kept the scoreboard twinkling a Dawg lead by the score of
30-3. Junior Dom Yantorn appeared next for Berwick.
Yantorn, in an all-out battle, utilized his powerful physical style
coupled with his mastery of technique to out-slug his opponent and
place an impressive 13-7 decision into the score book. Junior
Steve Prebola came out on fire next for the Dawgs. Prebola,
wrestling like a mad-man coupled with RoadRunner speed and the
flexibility of Gumbi, out-mastered his opponent in recording an
excellent 6-3 decision. The Warriors then grabbed the next
bout by major decision but followed up their second and last win of
the evening by tipping their hat once again by awarding a forfeit to
Dawg freshman Larry Keister.
Senior Top Gun Lou Ney then
walked onto the mat on a mission quest. It was a milestone
bout for Ney. A victory elevates his career win record to the
magic number #100. Ney tore off the opening whistle, and
utilizing his dominating physical strength and exact command of
near-flawless technique, sealed the match, sealed Career Win #100,
by sealing a singlet to that mat with a thunderous fall in
2:46. Senior Dawg phenom Josh Winkelmann was released from the
Dawg Pen next for Berwick. Winkelmann, wanting desperately to
keep the Dawg pinning streak alive, engaged in an all-out attack by
launching one catastrophic detonation of explosive move after
another before rocking the gym floor with a seismic fall in only
1:02.
It was then time for the last
bout of the night.
It was a bout to remember.
Sophomore Giovaninni Perla
appeared as the last Dawg out of the pen. Perla was entering
into his first-ever contested varsity dual bout. Perla took to
the mat of manhood and immediately engaged into an exciting slugfest
with his opponent. On the downside of the scoreboard entering
the third frame, Perla searched deep inside himself. There
were only 2 minutes left on the clock. Giovaninni rose to the
occasion and exploded in the third period with a vengeance that
witnessed him release an unrelenting attack on his opponent.
Time was running out. It was now or never. Perla, in an
absolutely spectacular display of sheer will, delivered a
bone-crushing blow that pulverized his opponent's shoulders into the
mat to record a magnificent pin at the 5:40 mark. Witnessing
Perla's thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Dawg Faithful leaped
to their feet in joy and celebration at the sight of such heart and
determination.
The Dawg Faithful greeted their
grapplers on a job well done in their 60-7 victory.
