5 Dawgs Place At 2008 District 2 Junior Varsity District Championship
Tournament
Posted February 18, 2008
Berwick junior varsity Dawgs traveled to
GAR High School in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, February 17, 2008, to compete in
the ever-growing District 2 Junior Varsity District Championship Tournament.
It was reported that this year's 2008 JV
District Tournament featured over 25 teams and more than 300 wrestlers.
That says a ton about the growth experienced in District 2 over the last
several years.
A total of 7 Dawgs competed and 5 had an
outstanding tournament securing place winning honors. Sophomore Frank
Peters notched outstanding Runner-Up honors. Freshman Larry Keister
and sophomores Giovaninni Perla, Brett Bodwalk, and Dom Morell all secured
impressive 3rd Place honors.
Congratulations Dawgs!!
Dawg Summary of Results
Frank Peters, Runner-Up, 280lbs
Sophomore Frank Peters was a pinning machine at the district tournament placing 2 first period falls out of his 3 total matches into the record books. In the quarterfinal round, Frank utilized his massive strength in delivering a pyroclastic blast when he nailed his opponent's shoulders to the mat in just 45 seconds. In the semifinal round, Peters once again stopped the clock in the first frame when he tore-up his opponent before cementing a singlet to the gym floor in yet another lightning quick pin in only 1:01 to advance to the championship final. In the final, Peters fought tooth and nail in a barnburner of a match in which he ended up on the short side of a 4-1 decision.
Great Tournament Frank - Congratulations!
Larry Keister, 3rd Place, 130lbs
Freshman Larry Keister unleashed a barrage of talent and mental toughness that witnessed him capture several close matches at the district tournament. Following a bye, Larry opened up in the quarterfinal round in a vicious battle that saw him outlast his opponent in placing an dazzling and fan-cheering 6-4 decision into the books. Keister then entered into yet another war in the semifinal that saw him drop a tough 6-4 decision in overtime. Larry was not deterred and came back on fire in the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match, Keister out-slugged his opponent with his renowned power and technique and recorded a superb 9-2 decision. In the consolation final, Keister exploded in a great match-up that witnessed his hand raised high by the referee after the final buzzer with the scoreboard lights beaming bright with a victorious 6-2 decision.
Great Tournament Larry - Congratulations!
Giovaninni Perla, 3rd Place, 140lbs
Sophomore Giovaninni Perla was another Dawg that showed both his mettle and mental toughness notching several close wins. Perla is only in his "first-ever year of wrestling" and has been improving at breath-taking speed throughout the season. Following a bye, Perla incurred a loss by fall in the quarterfinal round. It would be the only loss that Perla would have on the day. Giovaninni went into that extra gear in the consolation bracket and won an exciting slugfest in his next match that ended with a fantastic 4-3 decision. Following a forfeit in the next round, Perla then delivered an outstanding performance in the consolation semifinal that saw him notch a terrific 4-1 decision. In the consolation final, Giovaninni refused to be outdone, and in yet another electrifying match, had his hand raised high in the sky with a tremendous 7-6 decision to seal 3rd Place honors.
Great Tournament Giovaninni - Congratulations!
Brett Bodwalk, 3rd Place, 171lbs
Sophomore Brett Bodwalk, in perhaps the largest bracket in the tournament with 17 contestants, put on brilliant display of strength, technique, and sheer determination. In the preliminary round, Bodwalk captured a fantastic 6-1 decision. Brett then ripped through the quarterfinal round with a thunderous fall that crushed his opponent in a mere 1:04. In the semifinal, Bodwalk was in another all-out war that saw him end up just on the short side of a razor-thin 2-1 decision. That match would end up being Brett's only loss of the day. Bodwalk entered the consolation bracket on a mission not to be denied. In the consolation semifinal, Bodwalk engaged in nuclear warfare before melting shoulders into the mat for a fall in the third period. In the consolation final, Brett delivered another performance of overwhelming strength and technique when he devastated his opponent in recording a brutalizing 15-2 major decision.
Great Tournament Brett - Congratulations!
Dom Morell, 3rd Place, 215lbs
Sophomore Dom Morell, who has competed at heavyweight, giving up tremendous weight, throughout the season, got the opportunity to flaunt his superb skills and strength against same sized opponents. And Dom made most of his opportunity. After dropping a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinal round, Dom went into the champion caliber "refuse to lose" mode that witnessed him notch a simply outstanding 3 falls out of his next 4 matches. All 3 falls were first period pins. In his first consolation match, Dom wasted no time in denting the mat with a pair of shoulders in delivering a pulverizing pin in just 1:03. In the consolation quarterfinal, Morell detonated his second consecutive bombastic first period pin that stopped the clock at only 1:45. In the consolation semifinal, Dom delivered a barrage of overpowering moves, one after another, in recording a dominating 15-2 major decision. In the consolation final, Morell finished the day by finishing off his opponent with yet another stupendous bone-crushing first period pin in just 1:36.
Great Tournament Dom - Congratulations!
Congratulations Dawgs!!
