Excerpts From P-E Article, 2/5/08 Maczuga, 43, spent more than 30 years of his life dedicated
to Berwick wrestling as a wrestler, a coach and a mentor. The influence
Maczuga had on Berwick wrestling stretches from the elementary ranks on up.
He served as an assistant coach for junior high wrestling and had been a
mentor and friend to a number of Berwick's current high school wrestlers. "As a coach, a wrestler, and as a parent of wrestlers,
he was tremendously involved in our wrestling program," Berwick High
coach Ernie Yates said. "Our seniors, who have been very successful
wrestlers, he's coached them throughout the program." "It was real tough, especially for the guys who've been
wrestling for years, me, (Aaron) Karns, (Lou) Ney ... We've wrestled with
him since we started in elementary," Venditti said. "He was
always a good guy, Even during high school, he would always come to our home
matches, and even our away ones, and congratulate me after wins. He was
always very encouraging." "He's been a fixture in our program every since he
wrestled in the '80s. He's always been there," Yates said.
"Wrestling was a big part of his life ... he really enjoyed working
with the kids."
