Hazleton Downs Berwick 40 - 19 On January 23

Special Note:  this webmaster is sick as a dog and was present in "body only" during the Hazleton match so the emphasis here has to be brevity.

Berwick traveled to Hazleton High School on January 23, 2008, to take on the Cougars in a showdown of unbeaten District II teams.

The Cougars snatched several key bouts by decision from the Dawgs and overall the host team wrestled a great match in winning the contest against Berwick by the score of 40-19.

For the Dawgs and Dawg Faithful, on a night like the one against Hazleton, one has to simply tip their hat to the victor and realize tomorrow is a new day.

And there are a lot of exciting new days ahead for Berwick.

Berwick is now 17 - 5 on the season with one regular season contest left.  The Dawgs are still very much in the hunt for the upcoming District 2 AA District Dual Championship.

Berwick jumped out to an early 12-6 lead by grabbing three of the first four bouts.  Juniors Steve Prebola and Matt Knecht each recorded important wins by decision, 8-2 and 5-3 respectively, and senior Lou Ney cemented a key fall in only 1:45.

The Dawgs were unable to hold onto their early lead. The Cougars roared back taking the next 5 consecutive bouts that included a fall, a major decision, and 3 decisions.

The Hazleton rally provided the Cougars a comfortable 25-12 lead over Berwick.

Junior Ryan Sitler added to the Berwick score by winning his bout with a strong performance in placing a 9-2 decision into the scorebook.  Hazleton replied by taking the next bout by fall.  Sophomore Chris Bujno recorded the last Dawg victory of the night when he roughed up his opponent for a 16-2 major decision.

Berwick then tipped their hat with a forfeit in the next bout and Hazleton followed once again by taking the last contest of the night by decision that rang up the final score of 40-19 in Hazleton's favor.
