Dawgs Slay Coughlin Crusaders 2007 - 2008 BERWICK WRESTLING While it's hard to believe how fast time
can fly by, Berwick Wrestling hosted it's last home dual contest of the
season against Coughlin on Wednesday, January 16. The last home crowd
of the year got to witness the hot-streaking Dawgs slay the Crusaders by the
score of 51 - 21.
Berwick is now 16 - 4 on the season and
remain undefeated in district and state competition.
Prior to the dual against Coughlin,
Berwick Wrestling held it's annual recognition of our high achieving seniors
(see below) and paid tribute to our parents, fans, and treasured alumni.
Free food and a social gathering took place throughout and after the match.
Against Coughlin, the first three bouts
were over in a matter of 60 seconds. Berwick awarded a forfeit and the
Crusaders returned the favor giving the Dawgs 2 forfeits to both Sophomore
Chris Bujno and Junior Dom Yantorn. Almost instantly, Berwick had a
12-6 lead.
Junior Steve Prebola, a preacher in the
deliverance of pain, shot out of the Dawg Pen in the first contested bout
and admonished his opponent by absolving him of time on the mat when he
administered a punishing fall in a mere 1:43. Junior Matt "Lights
Out" Knecht was up next for Berwick. Knecht, as if he were in a
race against the end of time, beckoned all of his physical strength in one
ruthless blow that had his opponent starring into the heavens with a fall in
an astonishing 34 seconds.
Freshman Larry Keister then entered the
circle where only gladiators dare to stand. Keister, with unrelenting
determination and confidence, exploded with a pyroclastic blast of a fall
that melted his opponent to the mat in 5:30.
With Berwick now leading 30-6, next up
was the highlight bout of the night. Senior Lou Ney, in his final home
stand, quickly got involved in an all-out slugfest with his feisty opponent.
Ney, temporarily down 4-2 in the 3rd frame, rocketed the Dawg Faithful to
their feet when he took out the feet of his opponent. To add insult to
injury, Ney collapsed his opponent's shoulders to the mat for 3 back points
to light up the scoreboard with an absolutely thrilling 7-4 come-from-behind
glorious victory. Senior Josh Winkelmann, appearing for the
last time to the home crowd, immediately followed with yet another
gun-blazing and hair-raising war of will between two indomitable warriors.
Winkelmann, gathering up all that is within him, was not to be outdone and
he outmaneuvered and out-wrestled his worthy opponent in notching an
outstanding 10-6 victory that had the Dawg Faithful roaring with pride.
The Crusaders took the next bout by fall but that only dented the Dawg lead
which was now 36-12. Senior Nick Venditti, appearing for the
last time in the Dawg Gym, was determined to make his highly anticipated
home finale brief. Venditti, with his overpowering strength and
incredible quickness, faster than a camera shutter can capture, ended his
contest with his opponent almost as soon as it began by drilling a singlet
deep into the mat for the fastest pin of the night which clocked out at a
stupendous and mind-boggling 26 seconds. Coughlin then took a deep breath and was able to squeeze out
a hard-fought 13-10 decision in the next bout. The scoreboard,
however, was beaming a 42-15 Dawg lead. Senior Aaron Karns, trotting out to the Dawg logo in the
center circle for one last time, immediately jumped off the whistle to
confront his would-be stubborn opponent. Karns, using his renowned
provocative and punishing bull-like strength, simply
exerted dominating physical control of his opponent throughout the duration
in recording a splendid 6-0 decision into the home scorebook. Berwick
was now in the lead with a staggering 45-15 lead. Junior Ryan Sitler was released from the
Dawg Pen next for Berwick. Upon entering the circle of war, Sitler's
opponent raised eyebrows throughout the home side of the bleachers as he
looked like a slightly scaled-down version of the Incredible Hulk.
Sitler was not impressed or intimidated. Sitler constantly locked horns
aggressively against his opponent, and with lightning quick flurries that
resembled a pesky mosquito, a big pesky mosquito at that, Ryan soon began to
be simply too much to handle for his opponent. With virtually all of
the blood sucked out of his opponent, Sitler delivered his infamous fatal
bite of a pinning combination at the 5:42 mark to seal a crowd-going-nuts
victory. The Crusaders snatched the last bout of
the night by fall, but it was too little too late. The senior Dawgs took one last look at
the home wrestling mat while the Dawg Faithful emptied their seats to greet
their favored sons while watching scoreboard lights twinkling a 51 - 21
victory. Winning Dawgs Against Coughlin Congratulations Dawgs!!
